Our radiology services

Diagnostic imaging

Radiology X-ray imaging

X-Ray Unit

Digital X-rays of the chest, bones and joints. Most take 5–15 minutes and need no preparation.

Most often requested for suspected fractures, joint and skeletal problems, chest imaging, and spine or pelvic assessment.

Ultrasound examination using a handheld transducer

Ultrasound

Radiation-free scans of the abdomen, pelvis, thyroid and other soft tissues, viewed in real time.

Preparation depends on the scan. An abdominal ultrasound needs a 6-hour fast, while pelvic and prostate scans need a full bladder. Most other examinations need little or no preparation.

Bone Density · DEXA

Bone mineral density measurement used to assess bone health and osteoporosis risk.

The examination is simple and painless, takes around 15–30 minutes and needs no special preparation, although clothing with metal fasteners may need to be removed.

Health screening

Chest X-ray imaging used in selected work permit health screening

Work Permit Health Screening

Chest X-ray and associated screening for applicable Malta work permit requirements.

Your employer or HR representative starts the online health screening application, after which the appointment can be booked. Where a chest X-ray is required, it must be carried out in Malta, as reports from abroad are not accepted.

Our imaging technology

The quality of a scan depends on the equipment behind it. Our department runs a dedicated system for each type of examination, rather than one general-purpose machine covering everything.

Digital X-ray

Riviera LP Plus U-Arm

A digital U-arm X-ray system used for chest, skeletal and other requested examinations. Images are captured digitally, so there is no film to develop.

What to expect

A clear diagnostic pathway

Most scans are quick and need little or no preparation. The main exceptions are ultrasound examinations: an abdominal ultrasound needs a 6-hour fast, and pelvic or prostate scans need a full bladder. The page for your scan lists exactly what to do before you arrive.

Before your examination

Bring your referral or relevant medical information where applicable, plus any previous scans or reports, as earlier images are useful for comparison.

During imaging

A radiographer positions you and takes the images. A standard X-ray usually takes 5–15 minutes and a bone density scan around 15–30 minutes. Ultrasound times vary with the area being examined.

Radiation & safety

X-ray, mammography and DEXA use a small amount of ionising radiation, and DEXA a very low dose. Ultrasound uses none. Tell the radiography team if you are or may be pregnant before an examination involving X-rays.

Results & follow-up

Images are reviewed as appropriate for the examination. If further imaging or medical follow-up is recommended, this is discussed with you or your referring clinician.
