Joint pain & degeneration
Assessment of persistent joint symptoms, including cases where osteoarthritis or degenerative change may be contributing to pain and reduced function.
St Mary's Clinic has a particular focus on regenerative orthopaedics. Dr Frank Farrugia pioneered Stem Cell Therapy at the clinic in Malta and has more than 15 years of experience in the field, alongside PRP, prolotherapy and shockwave treatment for selected joint and musculoskeletal conditions.

Stem Cell Therapy is the centrepiece of our regenerative orthopaedics service. Dr Frank Farrugia began developing his work in this field more than 15 years ago and is recognised by St Mary's Clinic as a pioneer of Stem Cell Therapy in Malta. Over that time, he has developed an individualised treatment protocol for selected joint and musculoskeletal conditions.
Rather than presenting stem cells as a universal solution, patients are assessed individually. Dr Farrugia considers the condition being treated, previous investigations and treatment, and whether a regenerative approach is appropriate before recommending a procedure.
Alongside our flagship Stem Cell Therapy programme, St Mary’s also offers PRP, prolotherapy and shockwave therapy for selected joint, tendon, ligament and soft-tissue conditions.

PRP is prepared from a patient's own blood and injected into a targeted area. It may be considered for selected tendon, ligament, joint and soft-tissue problems following assessment.
Explore PRP →
An injection-based treatment used for selected chronic musculoskeletal complaints involving joints, tendons or ligaments. Suitability is determined following clinical assessment.
Explore Prolotherapy →
Uses externally applied acoustic pressure waves and may be considered for selected tendon and soft-tissue conditions as part of a broader treatment plan.
Explore Shockwave →Musculoskeletal symptoms can come from many different causes. The first step is identifying the likely source of the problem and deciding whether one of our non-surgical treatment options is appropriate.
Assessment of persistent joint symptoms, including cases where osteoarthritis or degenerative change may be contributing to pain and reduced function.
Selected tendon and ligament problems, including overuse injuries and persistent symptoms after an injury.
Assessment of injuries affecting movement, exercise or everyday activity, with treatment selected according to the structure involved and clinical findings.
PRP, prolotherapy, shockwave and regenerative procedures are not interchangeable. The most appropriate treatment depends on what is causing the symptoms, how long the problem has been present, previous treatment and the patient's wider medical circumstances.
Discuss the symptoms, previous injuries, investigations, treatments and how the problem affects daily activity.
The clinician determines whether a treatment offered at St Mary's is suitable or whether further assessment or another pathway is more appropriate.
If treatment is appropriate, the plan, expected course, limitations, potential risks and follow-up can be discussed before proceeding.

Yes. Musculoskeletal symptoms can have different causes, so treatment should be selected after clinical assessment rather than choosing an injection or device-based treatment based on symptoms alone.
They are non-surgical treatment options, but that does not mean they replace surgery in every case. Some conditions may respond to conservative or injection-based treatment, while others may need different specialist management.
There is no single treatment that is best for every joint problem. The diagnosis, severity, location, previous treatment and individual medical circumstances all affect which options are appropriate.
St Mary's currently offers orthopaedic PRP for selected tendon, ligament, joint and soft-tissue problems. Whether it is appropriate for a specific injury requires clinical assessment.
This depends on the treatment and the condition being treated. Individual service pages provide the clinic's current treatment schedules and pricing where published, but your clinician should confirm the plan for your case.
