Assessment first — especially for a changing or unusual mole.
Overview

A mole should be assessed before it is removed.

Moles can be flat or raised and vary in colour, shape and size. Many are benign, but removal should not begin with the assumption that every pigmented lesion is purely cosmetic.

Mole removal begins with careful assessment of the lesion, its history and the most appropriate treatment method.

Mole assessment

Careful assessment before removal.

Mole removal begins with careful assessment of the lesion, its history and the most appropriate treatment method.

What we assess

We assess the mole’s size, shape, colour, location, symptoms and any changes you have noticed over time.

Why the diagnosis matters

The treatment is selected for the actual lesion rather than applying the same removal method to every lump or skin growth.

Assessment

When should a mole be checked?

Seek assessment if you have noticed a new or changing mole, changes in size, shape or colour, repeated bleeding, persistent irritation, or another feature that concerns you. Assessment determines whether removal at our clinic is suitable or whether another pathway is more appropriate.

History

When it appeared, whether it has changed and any previous treatment.

Clinical appearance

Size, location, surface features and how the lesion or lump behaves.

Symptoms

Pain, irritation, bleeding, inflammation, drainage or repeated trauma where relevant.

Plan

Whether removal here is appropriate, which method is suitable and whether further testing is relevant.

Procedure

The technique depends on the mole.

Options may include shave excision for selected raised moles or surgical excision when appropriate. The clinician chooses the method after examining the mole; a technique should not be selected solely because it appears to leave the smallest mark.

01

Assess

Confirm what is being treated and whether removal is appropriate.

02

Plan

Choose the technique according to the lesion, site, size and clinical findings.

03

Remove

The procedure is performed using the agreed approach, with local anaesthetic when appropriate.

04

Aftercare

Receive wound-care and follow-up instructions specific to the procedure performed.

Recovery

Healing and scarring vary by technique.

A superficial removal and a surgical excision do not heal in the same way. You may need a dressing, wound care and, for some excisions, stitches. We provide aftercare based on the procedure actually performed.

Contact us if you develop concerns after treatment such as worsening pain, spreading redness, significant swelling, persistent bleeding or other symptoms you were not expecting.

Assessment and treatment are planned according to the type of lesion, its clinical appearance and the procedure required. Where a lesion is not suitable for routine removal, the next step can be discussed during assessment.

FAQs

Common questions

Important distinctions about mole assessment, removal, testing and healing.

01Can every mole simply be removed cosmetically?
No. The mole should first be assessed. If its appearance or history raises concern, the priority is an appropriate diagnostic pathway rather than cosmetic removal.
02How are moles removed?
Options may include shave excision for selected raised moles or surgical excision when appropriate. The appropriate method depends on the individual mole.
03Is mole removal painful?
Local anaesthetic may be used for procedural removal. You may feel the injection and can have some soreness afterwards; the experience varies with the method and site.
04Will my mole be sent for testing?
Not every removed mole requires the same testing. Histology or biopsy may be recommended according to the clinical assessment and removal method.
05Will there be a scar?
A mark or scar is possible after any procedure that breaks the skin. Its appearance depends on the technique, size and location of the mole, wound care and individual healing.
06Can a mole come back?
Recurrence can occur if mole cells remain after some types of removal. New moles can also develop elsewhere, so a future new lesion is not necessarily regrowth of the treated one.
