Not sure whether you are due?
Routine mammography screening is recommended from 40 years of age onward.
Mammography before 40 is generally considered when a patient is at higher risk of breast cancer
or when there is a specific clinical indication. In younger patients who require breast imaging,
ultrasound may be used as the first investigation where appropriate.
Breast screening FAQ
What age should I start having mammograms?
For routine breast screening, mammography is recommended from
40 years of age onward. Your individual screening schedule may vary
depending on personal risk factors, family history and previous breast findings.
Can I do a mammogram if I am younger than 40?
Mammography before the age of 40 is generally reserved for
higher-risk individuals or patients with a specific clinical indication.
In younger patients who require breast imaging, ultrasound may be used as the first investigation where appropriate.
What should I avoid before a mammogram?
On the day, avoid deodorant, antiperspirant, talcum powder or creams around the breast area,
as these can interfere with the images. A two-piece outfit is usually more convenient because you will need to undress from the waist up.
What if I have a breast lump or another new symptom?
Do not wait for routine screening. New breast or underarm lumps, nipple or skin changes,
unusual discharge, or other persistent changes should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
